Isotonic drink: what it is for and how to dose it
What is an isotonic drink?
A drink whose particle concentration is close to that of blood. Water passes more quickly through the intestine, which prevents a “heavy stomach” feeling. It generally contains carbohydrates (around 6%) and minerals.
When should it be used?
For efforts lasting over an hour, especially in hot weather. It combines hydration, energy, and sodium. For very long efforts, supplement it with gels or bars.
How many carbs per bottle?
A 500 ml bottle prepared according to the brand's recommended serving generally provides 25 to 40 g of carbohydrates. HIGH5 Energy Drink, for example, is prepared with 47 g of powder in 500 ml of water. Compare the product information to find the exact amount and add it to the amount from your gels.
Isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic: what’s the difference?
Hypotonic: less concentrated than blood, absorbed very quickly, ideal before starting or in hot weather. Isotonic: a balance between hydration and energy. Hypertonic: very high in carbohydrates, to provide plenty of energy when you’re well accustomed to it.
Can it be prepared in advance?
Yes, refrigerate it the night before, but not too far in advance. Avoid leaving a sugary drink in the sun.
How can you avoid nausea with an isotonic drink?
Choose light flavors (lemon, peach tea, red berries), which are better tolerated over time; alternate between two flavors or dilute a little more in hot weather.
Isotonic drink or electrolyte drink, which should you choose?
Choose an isotonic drink when you need energy and hydration at the same time, and a sugar-free electrolyte drink when your carbs are already coming from gels or bars. An isotonic drink provides carbohydrates and sodium; an electrolyte drink, often made with a tablet, provides mostly sodium and few or no calories. During a long effort in hot weather, many people alternate between the two bottles.
