Pre-competition training: a closer look at “the tapering phase” by Guillaume Klein

A closer look at “the tapering period”

As a race approaches, this is a decisive period for arriving on race day with all your abilities fully intact.
👉 Objectives
    • Reduce physical fatigue
    • Reduce mental strain
    • Optimize performance
👉 Duration
    • 1 to 3 weeks
The tapering period may be longer or shorter depending on the athlete’s training level and fatigue, as well as the type of competition being prepared for (cross-country, 10 km, half marathon, marathon, 100 km, trail, ultra-trail, etc.).
👉 In practice
    • Reduce volume
A 30% to 50% reduction in training time.
    • Maintain intensity
Of high-intensity training with low session volume (short VMA, short threshold, specific-pace reminders, etc.).
    • Reduce the frequency
One to three fewer training sessions than in your usual training schedule.
👉 In conclusion
These general guidelines provide a few ideas for structuring your training in the days before a competition.
However, it is necessary to personalize it and adapt it specifically to each person’s way of functioning in order to benefit from positive effects on performance on race day.
