From Holyfat to Brutal Salty Energy
Its founder, Alvaro, a former member of the Mexican national mountain biking team from 1994 to 1998, was preparing for the French Divide, a self-supported bikepacking ride across France. Unable to find a fat-based fuel that suited him, he created one himself. The Holyfat brand became Brutal Salty Energy and launched a US website in October 2025.
The principle: fat instead of sugar
A classic gel mainly provides sugar. BSE’s Zone 2 purée provides energy from fat (macadamia, MCT) with just 4.3 g of carbohydrates per sachet, according to the brand. As its name suggests, it is intended for moderate-intensity efforts: the brand itself notes that a Zone 2 ride and a threshold workout do not place the same demands on the body. For intense efforts, include a source of carbohydrates in your strategy.
Which Brutal Salty Energy product should you choose?
- ZONE 2 Macadamia & Salt Energy Purée (36 g): buy one to try.
- ZONE 2 Box (10 x 36 g): for a season of ultra-distance events or bikepacking.

For savory purées that are higher in carbohydrates, compare with 4ULTRA or Meltonic. Running with your dog? Don’t share this purée: macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. Choose a Kronch bar instead.
