At last, some attention to the beneficial effect of vitamin D on COVID-19
As part of the fight against COVID-19, 73 French-speaking experts and six national learned societies, gathered around Professor Cédric Annweiler, head of the Geriatrics Department at Angers University Hospital, and Professor Jean-Claude Souberbielle, both specialists in vitamin D, are calling for vitamin D supplementation for the French population as a whole (and not only for older people or those at risk of severe COVID-19).
Reducing infection and severe forms of COVID-19
A growing number of scientific studies indeed show that vitamin D supplementation (without replacing vaccination) could help reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as the risk of severe forms of COVID-19, intensive care admissions, and death. This group of experts are calling for vitamin D supplementation for the population as a whole, not only for older people.
In summary: it is advisable to know your vitamin D status and supplement it at a rate of approximately 1,200 IU/day.
"In the absence of any major risk associated with supplementation at an appropriate dose33 and given that approximately half of the general French population has vitamin D insufficiency,34everything today supports supplementing at-risk individuals for vitamin D insufficiency with vitamin D throughout the year (that is, people aged 80 and over, or those who are ill, frail, dependent, obese, or living in a nursing home), and the general population during the winter period.22The goal is for the majority of the general population to reach a serum 25(OH)D concentration between 20 and 60 ng/mL. The most methodologically robust studies indicate that an intake of 1,200 IU/day is necessary for this, which,35 in the absence of pharmaceutical forms of vitamin D suitable for simple daily use, could be replaced by taking 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 per month. Twice this dose should be prescribed for obese individuals. This approach in fact corresponds to following the recommendation (outside Covid-19) to maintain satisfactory vitamin D status in the general population, and therefore does not require waiting for the results of randomized controlled trials dedicated to Covid-19 before being implemented."
