How do electrolytes work?
Electrolytes are mineral salts found in the blood and cells. Sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc, and magnesium are the most important for athletes. They leave our bodies through sweat, which increases with the intensity of the effort and/or higher outdoor temperatures. This is why they must be replaced by consuming an electrolyte drink, more simply called a hydration drink.
Mineral salts play a crucial role in our bodies:
- Proper muscle function: They support better muscle fiber tone for contraction and relaxation.
- Hydration regulation: sodium helps regulate the amount of water in our bodies. Replenishing electrolytes allows the body to retain more water, which improves hydration, especially during physical activity.
- Maintaining pH balance: Mineral salts carry an electrical charge, so they contribute to the acid-base balance in body fluids.
Adding vitamins helps speed up the metabolism, or energy production (see the Benefits tab)
Finally, a hydration drink generally contains no carbohydrates and remains very close to zero calories. It is therefore an ideal drink for those who want to lose weight or for athletes who consume energy bars, energy gels, or energy purées alongside it.
What is the difference between a hydration drink and a sports drink?
Our electrolyte-based powder has two objectives:
- Support hydration by helping the body absorb water through mineral salts, trace elements, and vitamins.
- Replenish the mineral salts lost through sweating.
Its role is not to provide energy through carbohydrates and proteins (BCAA), as an exercise drink does.
The two drinks are therefore complementary.
If you also consume energy bars, energy gels, or energy compotes during exercise, the hydration drink may be sufficient.
What are the effects of dehydration on your body?
Here are some examples of the effects or consequences of dehydration on your body. As a reminder, adults are advised to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. Above all, do not wait until you are thirsty, especially seniors, who gradually lose the sensation of thirst, and of course athletes.
- A significant drop in blood pressure, forcing the heart to beat faster. The more the heart becomes exhausted, the more susceptible we are to heatstroke. Hence the need to drink very regularly during heatwaves.
- A lack of water in the body can contribute to high blood pressure, anxiety, low mood, headaches, lapses in attention, memory loss, and fatigue.
- Dehydration of muscle cells, which eventually become less productive and may even cause cramps. Lactic acid is not properly eliminated due to a lack of water and remains in the muscles. This naturally affects the quality of post-exercise recovery for athletes.
- Poor digestion, with symptoms including bloating, constipation, or acid reflux. Drinking enough water helps digest food more quickly and eliminate waste and toxins.
- Skin problems. Dry skin, irritation and inflammation (acne, psoriasis, eczema), and premature skin aging can result from repeated poor hydration.
- Weight gain. A lack of water sends a signal to the brain that can easily be mistaken for hunger, leading to snacking.
The final piece of advice, which may seem obvious, is to replace your consumption of sodas and sugary drinks of all kinds (including juice) with water as much as possible. Many people find it difficult to drink water because they complain that it lacks flavor. That is why our Mulebar drink powders are flavored (red berries and citrus) without containing sugar (less than 0.2%). So treat yourself!
Usage instructions:
How much powder should you use per bottle?
We recommend 10 g of powder, or 2 level 7 scoops, per 500 ml bottle. One serving meets your needs for one hour of exercise when consumed in small sips. Above all, do not wait until you are thirsty—it will be too late!
All of this remains theoretical and depends on many factors: type of sport, duration and intensity of the effort, weather conditions, the athlete's build, …
For example, we know that a trail runner will tend to space out their intake and consume 1 dose every 1.5–2 hours in winter, whereas a marathon runner or cyclist will consume it more quickly. In summer, their consumption will at least double, meaning one bottle per hour.
How many doses can be consumed each day?
Regarding maximum daily quantities, a useful reference point may be the NRVs (nutrient reference values) for vitamins and minerals.
We therefore recommend a maximum of 3 doses per day.
The idea is not to make daily intakes skyrocket, as some brands do by providing 100% of certain vitamins or minerals and encouraging the use of several bottles a day. This can result in 500% of the recommended daily intake for an active person, which is absurd and counterproductive. The excess will be eliminated by the body.
When should a hydration drink be consumed?
Our hydration drink can of course be consumed during sports activities, but also on a daily basis during periods of intense heat, to compensate for mineral salt losses caused by sweating, or by people weaning themselves off soft drinks who do not like plain water.
Athletes can consume it before, during or after exercise.
- Before exercise, it will help prepare the body and replenish mineral salts.
- During exercise, it promotes stable hydration by compensating for water and mineral salt losses and optimising energy metabolism (the body's energy production). It is suitable for all types of sports, whether high-intensity activities such as combat sports, team sports or racket sports, endurance activities such as running, trail running, mountain biking, cycling and triathlon, or calmer but no less demanding activities such as climbing, golf or hiking.
- After exercise, it will help remineralise and rehydrate the body, especially if you have been short of water at some point. This will greatly facilitate recovery.
